Lou Gehrig, widely regarded as one of the best baseball players to ever play, won his 2nd MVP on this day in 1936.
Gehrig won his first MVP in 1927 as a prominent player on the legendary Yankee team known as Murderers’ Row. He posted a batting average of .373, had 47 homers and a league-leading 173 RBIs. In 1936, at the age of 33, Gehrig batted .354, hit 49 homers and 152 RBIs. Gehrig placed in the top 5, 6 more times throughout his career and due to the rules at the time, he was considered ineligible to win the award more than once prior to 1928.
